New volunteers potluck/Nieuwe vrijwilligers potluck

 

This past Saturday, September 17th, we did a little potluck for all volunteers/maintainers and new volunteers to meet and share ideas and planning for the upcoming season! 

A lot of new folks have reached out to help keep the initiative going! So we organized this day for anyone that is interested to get more involved a chance :) For gardening, bikes, events, building the space, or just if anyone would like to help out in a small way. And there is still and always a chance to join us, help out, hang out and more. No experience needed, we all learn together and do the things we feel moved towards in whatever time we have. Joining also means sharing a presence of the space generally, knowing each other and being in communication about whatever's happening.

Many new people have signed up to keep the initiative going! We hebben ook een tuin! / We also have a garden!

Naast de fietsenstalling container verzorgen wij nu ook de tuin! Wilt u meehelpen met verzorgen, planten en kweken dan kunt u ook op onze werkdagen langskomen.

We gaan over het algemeen op dezelfde werktijden naar de tuin als wanneer de fietsenmaker open is, maar u kunt het gedeelte openingstijden van deze website raadplegen voor specifieke updates over de werktijden van de tuin. Als je zaden hebt om te doneren, ideeën hebt of met ons wilt experimenteren en leren, alles is welkom :) We zijn zeker op zoek naar meer mensen om voor ons te zorgen :)

We telen momenteel knoflook, kruiden (zoals munt, tijm, rozemarijn en laurier), erwten en druiven en zijn van plan meer groenten en bloemen te planten. We bouwen ook een composthoop.

Join us in capturing the excess energy from the sun, and in spending its surplus wealth in abundant generosity! 😝😝 Over the coming weeks we will begin to build the walls and roof of a greenhouse for the extension of the Do-It-Yourself Workshop. 🌸🌱

If you want to learn some building tips, or join the work, or just move your body, come build with us!  🛠💪 We will begin working the weekend of April 23 and 24 and will continue working each following weekend, but check our schedule here for updates.  The working hours are from 11:00 - 19:00.

Last summer and fall we got together and built the floor of the new space and now we are ready for framing!   The extension will be a polycarbonate (corrugated plastic on wood frame) greenhouse beside the shipping container we are currently occupying which will allow us to stay dry and protected from wind and cold as much as possible! 

And in the spirit of the workshop we want to build the space together with our friends and neighbors!  💕 

The working days will be choreographed by Tomi and Fraser who can help walk you through what we have done so far, and why, and what we plan next, and why we made those plans so you can join us in conceiving and implementing the assembly as we keep going.   Some details have been thought out but much spacing is left to be determined on site with our bodies, the tree and the environment.   We have tools and we can show you how we use them if you would like a lil demo.  🙂

And if you have any favorite tools (especially power drills) you are very welcome to bring them, and any other appendages that give you power.  🔋💓❤️‍🔥🔩

Have an idea for functions in the new space?

The completed glasshouse, which will be beautifully full of bike parts and plants, will be kept as an open and flexible workspace, but also with space for lounging and a small library wall. We want to open the space up as much as possible to other groups or residents of the neighborhood that would like to do activities here or host meetings, or just simply need a place to gather with friends. If you have any ideas for events, activities or other functions of the space, please get in touch with us and if there is anything in the design to facilitate this we would love to do it!

The 'Doe-Het-Zelf Werkplaats' is a workshop space in Rotterdam Noord where you can fix and build things, using the tools and materials that are available. The workshop is mainly geared at learning to repair bicycles, but you are more than welcome to work on other projects. Previous knowledge of bikes or tools are not at all necessary and the volunteers are always there to work together with visitors, learning and problem solving together, in caring exchange. The DHZ is an entirely non-commercial collectively-run space operating on donations of tools, spare parts and the time of the volunteers, which are in-turn shared with the public in reciprocal generosity. The DHZ centers anti-judgmental (queer) failure and collective learning as a way of making accessible repair skills/spaces especially to folks who might not feel comfortable in typical DIY spaces.

Help Us Build Our Workshop Extension! / Help ons bij het bouwen van onze werkplaatsuitbreiding!

Help us keep the Do-It-Yourself Workshop out of the rain! We are going to build a beautiful glasshouse extension around and beside the shipping container in which the Do-It-Yourself Workshop is currently housed, so we can fix bicycles comfortably in all weather conditions! The building project will mainly use found and recycled materials. But not everything we need is on the street! You can help us in three ways: by sharing materials, by sharing money and by joining us in building!

Rebuilding after the fire

In February of 2020 the previous home of the DIY Workshop, (of more than five years), was partially burned and we were forced to relocate. Fortunately we were able to move nearby to a shipping container in a neighborhood park on the Banierstraat in Agniesebuurt in which we spent the whole summer having fun fixing bikes in the sunny park. We love our new home, but to make it long-term sustainable and workable in bad weather we need to increase the indoor space. We will professionally build, in collaboration with our visitors and our wider community, a space which will keep the publicly visible and playful workshop environment alive, as well as provide more room for a wide range of functions that the neighborhood can make use of. In the spirit of the workshop, we will also open the building process as a series of learning workshops for anyone who is interested to build with us. Our home is your home! We are excited for this new chapter!

DHZ takes over MAMA

 

As part of the Gentle Strategising Week at Showroom MAMA, the Doe-Het-Zelf Werkplaats will take over the space fora 3 hour hang-out drop-in session. We will take this time to do things we typically don’t get to do at the werkplaats as we are too busy working. Namely to chill, reflect, display, (and do some practical stuff),and talk about the werkplaats, and informal/DIY/technical spaces in general, also.

Program:

2-3 hours drop-in hang out session with,
- inner tube patching lesson (ongoing)
- wheel truing lesson (ongoing)
- screening of mini documentaries of the werkplaats made by volunteers
- ending in the last hour with a public meeting/conversation, initiated by the volunteers, about and reflecting on the workshop and what we like about it etc, that invites other visitors to the hang-out to join us in (directly after the screening)

Items from the Doe-Het-Zelf archive will be around for browsing, as well as various bike parts in which visitors can guess a name for, and the most clever and/or funny name will win the bike part!

New (Temporary) Place of DHZ/ Nieuwe (Tijdelijke) Locatie van DHZ

We have a new place! Schout Heynricstraat, 3032 VA Rotterdam

Since March we have been going through a lot, globally and also in our workshop.

After a fire at our neighbour we had to close the workshop temporarily. It then turned out to be a serious damage to the building and we were evicted from our lovely workshop on Burgemeester Roosstraat where we stayed almost 6 years. It is very sad for us all but we would like to keep our activities going on.

Right after the fire epidemic broke out, which affected us all. During this period, protection measures caused delays for removing our stuff out and also finding a new place. Thanks to the efforts of our devoted volunteers, we could transfer all material from the workshop partly to a storage space and a temporary new location.

From this week on, at least until the end of summer, we will be operating from a very nice shed at a park on Banierstraat in Agniesebuurt. We are looking forward to seeing you again.

Wij zijn verhuisd! Schout Heynricstraat, 3032 VA Rotterdam
Sinds maart hebben we veel meegemaakt, wereldwijd en ook bij onze werkplaats.

Door een brand bij onze buren moesten we de werkplaats tijdelijk sluiten. Het bleek toen een serieuze schade aan het gebouw en we werden verdreven uit onze mooie werkplaats aan de Burgemeester Roosstraat waar we bijna 6 jaar gebleven waren. Het is heel triest voor ons allemaal, maar we willen onze activiteiten graag voortzetten.

Nadat de brandepidemie uitbrak, die ons allemaal trof. Tijdens deze periode veroorzaakten  beschermingsmaatregelen vertraging bij het verwijderen van onze spullen en het vinden van een nieuwe locatie. Dankzij de inzet van onze toegewijde vrijwilligers konden we alle materiaal uit de werkplaats overzetten deels naar een opslagruimte en naar een tijdelijke nieuwe locatie.

Vanaf deze week, in ieder geval tot het einde van de zomer, opereren we vanuit een heel mooie schuur op een park aan Banierstraat in de Agniesebuurt. We kijken ernaar uit u weer te zien.

Our workshop is temporarily closed due to the fire at our neighbours. Unfortunately we do not yet know how long it will stay closed and whether we can open the workshop again at our current place.

An appointment for this will be scheduled with a building inspector to determine any damage and next steps. However, due to current circumstances, this will not happen very soon. We will keep you informed.

As known, DHZ is run by volunteers and we certainly want to continue our work in our lovely Oude Noorden.  We will do our best to stay at our current location and in the meantime we keep our eyes and ears open for new possibilities.  Everyone is welcome to contact us for more information or ideas.

Onze werkplaats is tijdelijk gesloten vanwege de brand bij onze buren. Helaas weten wij nog niet hoe lang en of wij weer open kunnen op onze huidige locatie.

Hiervoor wordt een afspraak ingepland binnenkort met een bouwinspecteur om eventuele  schade en benodigde acties te bepalen. Wij houden jullie op de hoogte.

Zoals bekend DHZ wordt gerund door vrijwilligers en zeker willen wij onze werkzaamheden voortzetten in onze lieve Oude Noorden. Wij gaan uiteraard ons best doen om op onze huidige locatie te blijven en ondertussen houden wij onze ogen en oren open voor nieuwe mogelijkheden. Iedereen is welkom met ons contact op te nemen voor meer informatie en/of ideeën.

de Doe-Het-Zelf Werkplaats - een kleine historie -

In 2009 heeft de De Doe-Het-Zelf Werkplaats (DHZ) zich genesteld in een gekraakt pand aan de Vlietlaan 46-C in de wijk Kralingen in Rotterdam in een leegstaandwinkelpand, later verhuisd naar nummer 14. Vanaf mei 2009 gingen de deuren open! Het doel van de DHZ was om iedereen een kans te bieden aan hun eigen project te werken. Het bleek echter snel dat veel bezoekers fietsen binnen brachten om die te repareren, dit kwam goed uit aangezien de originele stichter van de DHZ een fietsfanaat bleek te zijn.

De buurt bleek achter de DHZ te staan! Toen een eventuele uitzetting in 2011 dreigde, werd geprobeerd dit door een petitie voorkomen.

Na een verbouwing en de zoektocht naar een nieuw pand, heeft de DHZ zich sinds 6 mei 2014 gevestigd aan de huidige locatie: Burgemeester Roosstraat 45.

De DHZ is altijd een plek waar iedereen welkom is, al meer dan 10 jaar lang. We zijn met een enthousiaste en diverse groep vrijwilligers altijd blij als jullie langskomen!

We hebben de DHZ Werkplaats weer opgeruimd, nieuwe kratten gekocht voor de onderdelen en binnenkort wordt een nieuwe montagestandaard gemonteerd. Kom graag langs!

Help het Voortbestaan van de Doe-Het-Zelf Fiets Werkplaats 

De Doe-Het-Zelf Werkplaats (DHZ) is een niet- commerciële werkplaats voor  etsenreparatie die ruimte biedt aan mensen om dingen te repareren en te bouwen. Het gebruik van gereedschappen en materialen is gratis, bezoekers en vrijwilligers van de DHZ delen kennis met elkaar en leren samen dingen. De meeste vrijwilligers en bezoekers van de DHZ wonen in de buurt, de DHZ is een gemeenschapsruimte van delen en zorgen, vol met mensen van alle leeftijden en achtergronden.

De DHZ bevindt zich al tien jaar in Rotterdam Noord en de laatste vijf jaar te vinden op de huidige locatie. Op 15 januari kwamen een burgerlijk ingenieur en een inspecteur van de gemeente om DHZ en andere gebouwen in het blok te controleren op structurele integriteit. Als gevolg van de gemeentelijke inspectie lopen we het risico om uitgezet te worden.

We willen DHZ in de buurt houden en deze ruimte langer actief houden in Noord. Maar we hebben uw steun nodig! Onderteken alstublieft onze petitie en help ons om op onze locatie te blijven of zoek een nieuwe locatie in de buurt! Door te ondertekenen kunnen we iedereen op de hoogte houden en klaarstaan om elkaar als gemeenschap te ondersteunen!

Help Save the DIY Bicycle Workshop

The Doe-Het-Zelf Werkplaats (DHZ) is a non- commercial bicycle-repair workshop space that gives space for people to  x and build things. Use of tools and materials are available for free and visitors and those who volunteer their time to manage the workshop share knowledge with each other and learn things together. Most of the volunteers and visitors to the shop live in the neighbourhood, and is a community space of sharing and caring, full of people from all ages and backgrounds.

For ten years DHZ has been in Rotterdam Noord and the last  ve years at its current location. On Jan. 15 a civil engineer and an inspector from the municipality came to check DHZ and other buildings on the block for structural integrity. As a result of the municipal inspection, we face the risk of being evicted.

We want to keep DHZ in our neighbourhood and keep this space active in Noord for a longer time. But we need your support! Please help sign our petition and help us to stay in our location or  nd a new location nearby! By signing we can keep everyone updated and be ready to support each other as a community!

Nieuwe vrijwilligers en nu ook op donderdagavond geopend

Het is super fijn om te vermelden dat we vaker open zullen zijn! Op woensdagen zullen Michele (avondleider) en Tom jullie verwelkomen en helpen met basis technische ondersteuning, Gerard zal op donderdagavond jullie te hulp staan met geavanceerde technische ondersteuning. Maarten blijft om de week de dinsdagavonden draaien. Yeah!

DHZ-Werkplaats opgeknapt!

Afgelopen zaterdag heeft de DHZ-Werkplaats een opknapbeurt gekregen, hij ziet er weer knap uit! Met zo'n acht vrijwilligers en vrienden hebben we geverfd, wielen opgehangen en ruimte gemaakt. Dank!

Het was super gezellig om met de vrijwilligers bier te drinken en plannen te maken om de werkplaats op te knappen in oktober.

We zijn op zoek naar vrijwilligers!

We are always welcoming to anyone who wants to engage more in the Do-It-Yourself Workshop, and there are many different ways to be involved.

How?

You could run the workshop (by yourself or with others) giving advice and jointly repairing bikes with visitors to the workshop. You can also help in maintaining the shop, working on improvement projects, or organizing other activities. (New ideas are also always welcome!)

Knowledge level about bikes can vary and we are all continuously learning together, so don't feel bashful! Everyone here has different skills, interests, knowledges and approaches to volunteering. The only thing that is required is an openness to learning, engaging, and being attentive to each other, visitors, and the workshop itself.

Workshops

We do learning sessions periodically depending on the availability of volunteers, but there is always the option for you to learn by doing, and the level of engagement can happen at your own pace. Our 'training' periods for new volunteers are always dependent on the person as everyone is different!

We heten iedereen van harte welkom die bij wil dragen aan de Doe-Het- Zelf Werkplaats en er zijn veel manieren waarop dit zou kunnen.

Hoe

Je kan de werkplaats leiden (zelf of met anderen) advies geven en samen met bezoekers fietsen repareren in de werkplaats. Je kan ook helpen bij het onderhoud van de winkel, werken aan verbeterplannen of activiteiten organiseren. (Nieuwe ideeën zijn altijd welkom!)

Het kennis niveau van fietsen en het repareren ervan verschilt en wij zijn allemaal continu bij aan het leren, dus er is plaats voor iedereen. Ieder- een heeft verschillende vaardigheden, interesses, kennis en aanpak bin- nen zijn of haar rol. Het enige vereiste is een open en actieve houding naar de anderen in de werkplaats en de bezoekers en de werkplaats zelf.

Workshops

We organiseren af en toe leersessies, afhankelijk van de beschikbaarhe- id van vrijwilligers, maar je kan daarnaast altijd leren door te doen. Je kan daarbij je steentje bijdragen op de manier die je zelf wil. Onze ‘trainings- periode’ voor nieuwe vrijwilligers verschilt altijd, omdat iedereen verschil- lend is!

Nieuwe wielrichter en meer info over de vrijwilligers

Jazeker, we hebben een mooie nieuwe wielrichter! Een bezoeker van de Doe-het-zelf Werkplaats heeft deze aan ons gedoneerd, super cool!

Daarnaast gaan we wat info over de kundigheid van de vrijwilligers op de website zetten. Ondanks dat we allemaal door Ed, de initiator van de DZ Werkplaats zijn opgeleid, zijn de vaardigheden niet bij iedereen gelijk. Zodat jullie als klanten weten wat jullie kunnen verwachten, zullen we deze info binnenkort op de website zetten.

DHZ Werkplaats opgeknapt!

Het is alweer even geleden sinds het laatste bericht van de DHZ-Werkplaats te lezen was, maar er is veel veranderd!

Ten eerste is de oprichter van de DHZ, Ed, afgelopen zomer verhuisd naar Amsterdam en kan hij de DHZ dus niet meer draaien. Ed heeft een enorm mooie werkplaats achtergelaten en de huidige groep vrijwilligers zal proberen op dezelfde voet door te gaan. Ed heeft zijn kennis zoveel mogelijk overgedragen aan de groep vrijwilligers die jullie nu in de werkplaats zullen aantreffen.

Ed, ook al kom je regelmatig buurten, we missen je nu al! Veel plezier met je nieuwe avontuur in Amsterdam.

Ten tweede hebben we twee nieuwe vrijwilligers: Joergen en Maarten. Joergen werkt in zijn eigen werkplaats aan de meest professionele racefietsen die er bestaan en zal bij ons zijn handen zwart maken aan rammelende tweewielers. Maarten kennen jullie misschien van de Speelfabriek in Rotterdam waar hij zijn eigen speeltuin voor kinderen heeft gebouwd, maar hij helpt dus ook volwassenen bij de DHZ.

Als laatste heeft een groep vrijwilligers afgelopen weekend de DHZ opgeknapt: een nieuwe lik verf op de werkbanken, ramen lappen, poetsen, rommel eruit, onderdelen ophangen, schoon! Het ziet er weer mooi uit.

Bij deze wensen de vrijwilligers iedereen mooie feestdagen!

Een half jaar!

Het eerste half jaar aan de Burgemeester Roosstraat is achter de rug! De werkplaats wordt goed gebruikt; we zijn in de laatste zes maanden 101 keer open geweest, en tijdens openingstijden zijn er in totaal 377 fietsen door bezoekers gerepareerd.

De verbouwings-kosten zijn inmiddels ook ruimschoots gedekt door vrijwillige donaties van bezoekers, dank daarvoor!

Twee maanden op de Burg. Roosstraat

Op zondag 6 juli was de werkplaats precies twee maanden geopend op de nieuwe lokatie aan de Burgemeester Roosstraat. In die twee maanden zijn we 36 keer open geweest; je kon dus gemiddeld om de dag in de werkplaats terecht! In totaal zijn er 114 fietsen door bezoekers gerepareerd; gemiddeld drie fietsen per keer dat we geopend waren.

Ook qua donaties loopt het goed; in twee maanden tijd is genoeg geld gedoneerd om de helft van de verbouwings-kosten terug te betalen.

Nieuwe lokatie

Na jaren dakloosheid en een langdurige verbouwing gaat de Doe-het-zelf Werkplaats eindelijk weer open voor publiek!

Op dinsdag 6 mei ben je van 20:00-22:00 uur van harte welkom in onze nieuwe ruimte: Burgemeester Roosstraat 45.

DIY Bike!Fest

Tussen 28 en 30 augustus vindt in Utrecht het jaarlijkse 'Do It Yourself Bike!Fest' plaats. Het is de plek om al je fiets-woede om te zetten in aktie! Veel wrakken, hand-gereedschap, las-apparatuur, vreemd-ruikende mensen, workshops, muziek, etc.

This year’s festical will once again give you the opportunity to

- Work & learn. There’ll be workshops, bike wrecks, parts and tools at your disposal. And plenty of people to lend you a hand whenever you might need it!

- Have fun. Prepare for alley cat, (tall) bike games, bakfiets race with new obstacles and bike wars!

- Make a statement. Show ‘em some pedal power and come block the city streets with a critical mass! We are not an obstruction of traffic – we are the traffic!

- Enjoy. We promise you plenty of delicious vegan food and drinks, bands and DJ’s, bike pits and silly dancing!

Bike culture might already be considered widely accepted but cycling is about more than just that. More than the amount of bikes and bikepaths, or just simple transportation from point A to point B. Bikes offer us the chance to avoid the tyranny of the oil industry and to run away from the constant movement control of OV chip cards. It’s anarchy on wheels!

So come and join us for this year’s festival! But be warned: it’s addictive!
